But First, Bulletproof

Before we jump into choosing the perfect blender, we need to talk about what bulletproof coffee actually is. For those of you who are up to date on the trend, go ahead and skip to the bit about blenders.

For those of you who are a bit behind, here’s the short and sweet explanation:

You need 3 ingredients: 1 cup fresh black coffee, 2 tbsp grass-fed butter (YES, grass-fed), and 1 tbsp brain octane oil (NO, coconut oil). Pop those in a blender and voila! You have bulletproof coffee.

Buttered Up for a Blender

As you can probably guess, one of the most important parts of whipping up bulletproof coffee is the blender. Not just any blender is going to cut it.

If your blender isn’t heat resistant and powerful, chances are you’ll end up with chunky, plastic-flavored slop rather than the creamy, dreamy bulletproof brew.

The goal here is to find a powerful, heat-resistant blender that can not only handle your bulletproof brewing needs but can also perform well under a variety of circumstances. With counter space at a premium, you don’t want a one-trick pony.

Best Blenders for Bulletproof Coffee

We have separated our favorites into three categories: countertop, immersion, and high end. Here’s a quick break down of those categories so you know which blender type is best suited to your lifestyle:

  • Countertop blenders are the traditional options. They are going to be best for people who don’t mind keeping their blenders out and would prefer to simply press a button and let the blender do its thing.
  • An immersion blender (or handheld blender) is perfect for people who have very limited counter space and need a blender that will be easy to stow away. As long as you don’t mind the manual nature of these blenders, they’re a great choice all around.
  • The high-end blenders are the pricier models with all the bells and whistles you could ask for. If you’re looking for a blender that can go to bulletproof coffee and (way) beyond, these are the best blenders for you.

Now let’s get started!

Ninja Foodi Cold & Hot Blender: Best Countertop

The Ninja Foodi Cold and Hot blender is a great balance of affordability and features.

The blender has a 64 oz glass pitcher (56 oz max liquid capacity), which is perfect for keeping any odd tastes from seeping into your brew. Additionally, the 12 pre-programmed blending options, the Auto-IQ, and Heat-iQ make this option incredibly easy to use.

There are a 1400-watt motor and 800-watt heating element, so you know this machine is backed with some serious power. The stainless steel blades are capable of crushing ice, and the heating element is capable of preparing soups, sautees, sauces, and more.

Runner up: Oster Versa Professional Blender

With slightly less power (1100 watts) and a BPA free pitcher (rather than glass), the Oster Versa is a great, budget-friendly option that still offers a great amount of versatility.

Oster Versa has a combination of manual settings and pre-programmed ones so you can choose between precise control and super simple everyday use. The blades alternate back and forth to give more thorough results.

The blender also comes with two 20-oz blend ‘n go cups. While those aren’t great for bulletproof coffee (and other hot beverages), they’re perfect for smoothies and other blends. Plus, this blender is backed by a 7-year warranty, so you know the company stands by this quality and durability of this product.

Breville Control Grip Blender: Best Immersion

On Sale

If you are looking for a hand blender that can do it all, look no further than the Breville Control Grip Blender. This unique blender with a bell-shaped base, internal ribbing, and ergonomic control grip makes for greatly improved blending capabilities.

The Breville Control Grip is both easy to use and easy to clean. It is trigger operated with an adjustable speed. The non-scratch base helps to prevent damage to pots and other containers, and the 8″ immersion depth is extra useful for large batches.

This blender comes with a 25-ounce (3-cup) chopping bowl, whisk attachment, and a 42-ounce (5.25-cup) blending jug. The jug (which is what you’d use for bulletproof coffee) features a dual-purpose storage lid and anti-slip mat.

Runner Up: Kitchenaid Pro Line Blender

If the idea of a versatile hand blender sounds like the right tool for your bulletproof coffee needs but you are looking for something a bit smaller than the Breville option.

The 3-cup blending jar is perfect for blending one or two servings of bulletproof coffee. The blender also comes with a whisk attachment and a BPA-free 2.5 cup chopper attachment, so this tool can be useful in a number of kitchen activities.

The Kitchenaid also has a nice, 8″ blending arm and soft-grip handle. The fixed S-blade is perfect for blending several different things from soups to smoothies and, of course, bulletproof coffee. Overall, it’s perfect for small blending jobs around any kitchen.

Blendtec Total Classic Blender: Best High-End

Now, if you are planning on really dipping into your pocketbook on this one, you will definitely want to consider the Blendtec Total Classic Blender.

This is an incredible option, especially for those of you who tend to brew and blend in larger batches. The Blendtec Total Classis features a 72-ounce jar (with 32-ounce blending capacity). The 1560 watt blender uses 80% thicker stainless steel blunted blades with wings, so not only are they incredibly powerful but they’re also safer to handle.

Beyond the blades, this blender features 6 pre-programmed cycles, a pulse function, and 10-speed manual control, all with one-touch buttons. In all, you have the perfect mix of precise manual controls and easy hand-off controls. Plus, it even has a self-cleaning function! So easy to clean is an understatement.

Additionally, the Blendtec blender is backed by an impressive 8-year warranty. The family-owned, American Company engineers and assembles their products in the USA (which accounts for part of the upper-tier price point).

Runner Up: Vitamix 5200 Self-Cleaning Blender

On Sale

No matter what best blender list you’re looking at, chances are you are going to come across mention of something in the Vitamix line. But, to be honest, we have some mixed feelings on the team about them.

Logistically the Vitamix has similar features to other blenders we’ve discussed, though it does take quality to the next level. Additionally, it has improved longevity and effectiveness, but that comes with a hefty price tag.

Nonetheless, we decided to include it because, despite the price, this blender does seriously outperform most options on the market, especially when it comes to hot liquids. So if money is no object, this is the blender to choose for your bulletproof coffee needs.

This blender features variable speed control, large batch capacity, a radial cooling fan and thermal protection system, friction heat capabilities, a 30-60 second self-cleaning function, and a 7-year warranty.

What NOT to Buy

We’ve been seeing quite a few blender recommendations for bulletproof coffee that will not work for you.

Ninja Professional 1000 CANNOT handle hot liquids. This fact is confirmed in the Ninja Professional blender’s user manual, yet this machine is an inexplicable frequent flyer on recommendation lists across the internet. While this is an incredible, budget-friendly blender in general, exposing it to hot coffee every day is a sure-fire way to destroy this machine.

If you are interested in the Ninja blender, check out the Cold and Hot Foodi mentioned above. It is specifically designed to handle a wider temperature range, so it is perfect for serious bulletproof coffee drinkers.

Aside from the Ninja Professional debacle, there are also several people who will recommend inverted blenders for the sake of simplicity. While this type of blender is great for an on-the-go lifestyle, they typically don’t stand up well to heat exposure over time.

So if you are more of a bulletproof on occasion, smoothie on the regular type of person, then an inverted blender might be fine. Just make sure it is made using high-quality plastic or glass so that it won’t contaminate your brew. Nonetheless, we couldn’t call any of these the “best blender for bulletproof coffee.”

To that point, we’ve gotten a lot of questions about whether you can use a NutriBullet to blend this hot coffee beverage. The answer is NO! The company openly advises against putting any hot liquids into the blender.

Benefits of Bulletproof

Let’s talk about the ingredients first. As we mentioned before, Bulletproof coffee is made using 3 very specific things, each with their own signature health benefits. Here’s what each one is known for:

  • Black Coffee: Antioxidant-rich with chlorogenic acid, caffeine, and more.
  • Grass-fed Butter: More antioxidants (including beta carotene) as well as anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids when compared to regular butter
  • Brain Octane Oil: High in fatty acids; great for ketogenic energy boosts.

Some people choose to substitute the Brain Octane Oil for a generic MCT oil or coconut oil. These come with their own health pros and cons, so make sure to research the ingredients before putting them in your drink.

Is this the brew for you?

There are a couple main demographics that are perfect potential consumers for Bulletproof coffee: Athletes, Ketogenic dieters, Paleo dieters, and other low-carb diets.

Both lifestyles require a high amount of fats and proteins in comparison to their carbohydrate intake. So a bulletproof coffee as their breakfast supplement should work great, especially if it is alternated with other, more-nutrient rich options.

However, Bulletproof coffee can have some health drawbacks that make it not ideal for an average person’s everyday diet. Namely, it is low in nutrients, high in saturated fat, and may even raise your cholesterol.

Immersion vs Countertop Blender

The main differentiator between these two types of blenders is power. Countertop blenders, while they are bulkier and tend to make for harder clean-up, pack a more powerful punch. That extra power can be useful if you are blending things like creamy soups and frozen drinks or smoothies.

On the other hand, though they have less oomph, immersion blenders are easier to tidy up after and easier to stow away in between uses. An immersion blender is great for making batters, dressings, or smoothies without hard ingredients.

When it comes to looking at blenders for bulletproof coffee, both an immersion blender and a countertop blender will work. Making bulletproof coffee does not require blending up any hard substances, and the oil, coffee, and butter lend themselves naturally to creating a smooth, creamy texture without a major power boost.

Thus, choosing between the power player countertop blenders and the versatile immersion blenders comes down to what you plan to use the blender for beyond being a blender for bulletproof coffee.

If you are limited on counter space and would prefer a smaller, handy tool that you can use in a variety of kitchen blending, chopping, and mixing tasks, then an immersion blender is best. If you need a blender with some serious power behind it to blast through larger, heavy-duty blending tasks, then a countertop blender is the way to go.

Things to Consider

Note: You’ll notice that none of these are inverted blenders. That’s on purpose! Inverted blenders are not a great choice if you plan to blend hot liquids. The heat tends to weaken the lower seals, causing leakage and making for lots of messiness.

Higher wattage tends to mean more power, but it also means more noise. Unless the blender you are buying is specifically labeled as “quiet” chances are it’s not. Immersion or hand blender options tend to be quieter than their countertop counterparts.

So if you are doing some early morning blending while your housemates are sleeping, consider seeking out a less intense blender. If you truly need something that is near-silent, consider expanding your search to blenders with noise shields. Just make sure they can handle hot liquids.

Pro Tip: A good thing to pay attention to is the weight of the machine in comparison to the power of its motor. Lighter machines with high-power motors will inherently be louder, as there is less buffer to muffle the noise and the motor is more likely to make the machine shake, making even more noise.

Right alongside noise is, of course, the motor. A blender for bulletproof coffee will need a strong, efficient motor, but something with commercial-level power is unnecessary. Because bulletproof coffee doesn’t require blending ice or other particularly hard substances, mid-level motor power should work perfectly fine.

However, if you are also blending up a variety of smoothies with frozen fruits and ice in addition to your morning coffee, you’ll need to look at motors with a bit more power. To determine the power of the blender motor, look at the machine’s wattage.

Our picks for the best blender for bulletproof coffee range from 200 watts (Kitchenaid) to 1560 watts (Blendtec). So, regardless of what your blender needs are, you should be able to find one that suits those needs here.

Arguably the most important part of a blender, let’s talk about the blades! No matter how great your motor is, if you don’t have the blades to match, then your blender is going to be sub-par.

All top-notch blades are made of stainless steel, some are even coated in Teflon. As for sharpness, there is room for debate. Some blades are made to be thick and deliberately dull either to increase their safety or ensure that their performance is consistent over time.

On the other hand, lower-power blenders will likely need shaper blades to work effectively.

This will help ensure that the blades are as durable as possible while also negating it from getting dull due to regular use, giving it that much-needed longevity. You should also look for blenders that have removable blades as this will make cleaning considerably easier.

There are a couple of things we need to cover when it comes to warranty information: length and coverage.

First, the easiest thing to look at is the length of the warranty. The blenders here have warranties ranging from one to eight years. This number should give you a decent idea of the lifespan of your machine, which is generally a few years past the warranty.

Second, the coverage is as important (if not more important) than the length of the warranty. A machine might have an 8-year warranty, but if it only covers a few defects to stainless steel blades and not your motor, it doesn’t mean quite as much.

Make sure to read the fine print on this one, especially if you are paying premium prices for a high-end blender.

Wrapping Up

So there you have it! There is the round-up of the best blenders for bulletproof coffee. Hopefully among them is the perfect one for your bulletproof coffee blending needs. We’re confident that each of them can achieve that decadently creamy, coffee-infused brew.
