The popular wizarding beverage, a popular pick among Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry students visiting Hogsmeade, tastes “a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch.”

Harry Potter fans who are curious about what butterbeer tastes like can buy a cup of it from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios or order it online from companies like Flying Cauldron or the Harry Potter Shop.

And if you want your cup of coffee to taste just as magically delicious as this treat? You’ll have to try a sweet butterbeer latte. Read on, and we’ll tell you how to make one.

You’ll Need

  • 2 shots espresso
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup creamer or milk of choice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon caramel sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • milk frother and frothing pitcher
  • mug

The Process

Step 1:

dropping butter and caramel sauce into a mug

Start by dropping butter and caramel sauce into a mug.

Then, turn on your trusty espresso machine, pull out your favorite bag of beans (if you’re looking for recommendations, blonde espresso beans are our latest obsession), and let the strong coffee brew over the butter and caramel. Stir well.

Don’t worry if you don’t have an expensive espresso brewer; a Moka pot creates a rich java concentrate you can substitute for espresso in this coffee recipe. Plus, it comes at a much lower price.

Step 2:

Adding vanilla extract, milk, brown sugar and cinnamon to a cup.

Set the fresh espresso, butter, and caramel sauce mixture aside. Then, add vanilla extract, milk or creamer, brown sugar, and cinnamon to a small cup or frothing pitcher.

Use a handheld frother or your coffee maker’s built-in milk steamer to mix those ingredients well until they’re combined.

Step 3:

Topping the espresso mixture with freshly frothed milk

Top the espresso mixture with your freshly frothed milk. Then, enjoy your homemade butterbeer latte as is or topped with whipped cream, cinnamon, or caramel drizzle — add all three if your sweet tooth is extra strong.

Our recipe walks you through making this hot coffee drink, but that doesn’t mean an iced coffee person has to miss out on the fun.

Modify the recipe slightly to have this delicious latte cold. Skip the steamer and add your milk as is or froth it cold. Don’t forget to add a few ice cubes to your glass with the buttery-flavored espresso mixture.

The Burning Questions About Butterbeer

You want to know more about the sweet drink, and Roasty’s got the information! Below are answers to a few frequently asked questions about butterbeer.

What Is Butterbeer Made Of?

In the Harry Potter books, butterbeer comes from three ingredients: sugar, water, and butterscotch. However, we muggles have to add a few extra ingredients.

While plenty of butterbeer recipes are floating around, most have the same core components: cream soda, vanilla extract, heavy cream, butter extract or melted butter, and butterscotch syrup.

Is Butterbeer Alcohol?

The Harry Potter books lead us to believe butterbeer has alcohol (remember Winky, the alcoholic house elf?), but outside of the world J.K. Rowling created, butterbeer contains no alcohol.

However, making a butterbeer-inspired cocktail wouldn’t be hard. Replace the butterscotch syrup with butterscotch schnapps and the vanilla extract with vanilla vodka, and voila — a grown-up twist!

How Do I Order a Butterbeer Latte From Starbucks?

The words “butterbeer latte” aren’t printed on the Starbucks Coffee menu. But that doesn’t stop devoted Harry Potter lovers from getting a butterbeer-flavored beverage from one of the coffee chain’s locations!

The butterbeer latte is a Starbucks Secret Menu item. Order it by asking for a steamer with espresso, caramel syrup, cinnamon dolce syrup, and toffee nut syrup.

What’s the Best Way To Drink Butterbeer?

Since the Roasty website is all about coffee, our answer is probably a bit biased: the best way to enjoy the flavors of butterbeer is to put them into a delicious coffee treat!

Regardless of what we think is best — made into a latte, in case you wondered — there is no absolute answer here; it’s a matter of preference.

Most people drink butterbeer cold, sipping it like a soda. However, it isn’t unusual to find butterbeer served hot on a winter afternoon or blended into an icy slush in the summer.

Whichever way you like it most is your best way to drink it.

Make a Cup of Butterbeer Coffee

It’s a shame you can’t use a refilling charm in real life. We’re almost positive that as soon as you finish slurping this homemade latte down, you’ll wish your coffee cup was full of it again.

It’s good that this recipe doesn’t take too long to make — you can whip up an iced or hot butterbeer latte in no time.
