Things to Consider Before Purchasing a Cold Brew Coffee Pot

You might ask yourself why you’d invest in some cold brew maker and not a drip coffee machine. After all, you have a coffee maker, a refrigerator, and ice cubes.

The fact is, there’s a big difference between a good cold brew and iced coffee. Iced coffee is as simple as it sounds. Make coffee, put it in the fridge, throw in cubes, good to go.

On the other hand, cold brew is a process. You soak grounds or beans in cold water to gradually extract caffeine, oils, and fats. The result is a nice, smooth taste with minimal acidity. The result is a nice, smooth taste with minimal acidity.

Unlike iced coffee, a brew won’t alter the chemical composition of fats and oils. A misstep that results in that bitter taste in your coffee you might be familiar with. That’s why a cold brew takes between 12 and 24 hours to prep with around 20 ounces of water.

The Hario Cold Brew Maker isn’t for the person who needs their fix now. It’s for the discerning drinker who prefers a quality cup of iced joe. Someone is ready to put in the time and reap the rewards. Someone like you.

Features and Benefits

The minimalist design makes the Mizudashi cold, brewer an option for the new brewer. Yet, it provides a high-end taste that seasoned brewers will love. Take a look at the benefits and features of Hario Cold Brew.

Its design is very approachable and won’t make you wonder how hard this process is going to be. It’s also eco-friendly and functional. The carafe is glass and can make between six and eight cups at a time.

The removable mesh is permanent. The filter’s made of polyester resin, a strong component that holds up. Hario cold brew engineers experimented with the brewing process and promise maximum flavor extraction. The lid, handle, and filter holder are manufactured from durable polypropylene.

Ease of Use

With only three pieces, the assembly is a snap. The brewer is a sleek and modern design. That makes it easy to store and keep in the refrigerator. You can see how Hario’s brewer works here.

Compared to other cold brewers, the Hario cleans up nicely. Remove the filter basket from the carafe, toss the grounds, and rinse the device in water.

As long as you rinse it right away, you’re good. The glass carafe is dishwasher safe. But don’t run the filter through a dishwasher if you want to keep it safe.

With only three parts, all pieces are detachable. Rinse and wash them as frequently as you want. They’re dishwasher safe, but I recommend hand washing the parts.

Brew Quality

This is a notable deficiency in what’s otherwise one of the market’s best cold brew machines.

Unlike other processes, you don’t immerse the ground coffee in water as freely or as long as other systems. We’re talking about traditional  French press or mason jar techniques. The result is a brew that may lack rich flavor.

The lightness seems to be a function of the water to coffee ratio. A solution might be to use a higher quantity of coffee grounds as it will give you back a flavor you might prefer.

Another option is to grind finer. Not as much as you don’t want to over-extract. Perhaps just enough to get a little more flavor out of the coffee beans. You want to avoid over-extraction.

Experimenting with the process is going to help find the perfect blend. This is where you balance out the intense flavor and minimize the bitter or acidic negatives.

Mizudashi is impressively priced, especially for anyone testing the process. As it comes with a carafe, you have the added convenience of pouring and storing cold brew.

Another minor issue with Hario is in the design. The one-liter volume is relatively small, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Unfortunately, this means the brewer doesn’t produce a solid coffee concentration.

That’s easy to correct. After creating a brew, pour yourself a glass. Add your milk and sugar and enjoy.

A big selling point with a lot of cold brew lovers is keeping a reservoir of cold brew in the fridge. Hario may let you down here, as it tends to not preserve well.

Low Acid Content

Caffeine promotes conditions like acid reflux. They increase acidity in gastric secretions. This is not the case for everyone, but caffeine can cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax. This triggers acid reflux.

Anyone experiencing reflux or suffering from sensitive stomachs and appreciating good coffee would do well with the Hario brewer.

Use the brewer for all your joe. Put together some cold brew, or pour yourself a mug and set it in the microwave—heat to taste.

It may seem like work, but it will still be a fine cup of morning joe. And you’ll promote better overall health.

This isn’t the Coffee Brewer for You if…

Single brewings aren’t giving you the volume you prefer.

You’re a coffee nerd. This is perfect for the beginner and we’re sure seasoned drinkers will find it a good option. But it won’t be for everyone.

You don’t think you’re ready for drip coffee makers. That’s a more costly option. Hario is a starter.

There are other home alternatives for cold brewing, like the French press,  mason jar, or other methods. But considering the advantages, the Hario Cold Brew Coffee Pot can be a dedicated, simple-to-use solution. You’ll gain experience and see how much energy and money you want to put into the process.

If the Hario doesn’t quite hit the spot, here are some alternatives:

Bonavita Connoisseur Brewer. Bonavita is fresh from the brewing scene, but they’re fast making a name for themselves. If the Hario cold brew flavor is not rich enough for you, the Bonavita may be a better choice. Its pre-infusion function and 12-hole showerhead ensures even saturation and extraction for the best flavor.

Ninja Hot & Cold Brewed System. This machine is a beast. It makes coffee and tea. If you’re looking for more variations and settings, this machine is a great alternative. There are controls for individual, multiple, or extra-large cups. It never fails to impress.

Cold brew production makes for a less bitter, smoother, and less acidic cup of good coffee. Its process extracts the most aromatic flavors from the grounds. Many coffee enthusiasts love a good cold brew.

The Hario Cold Brew Maker helps you get the jolt you need with a little fuss.

I hope this guide was helpful. Hario Cold Brew Maker is of simple, slim, and modern construction. It’ll look great on a countertop without taking up a lot of room. Its capacity is good for a small party or, depending on your consumption, up to a week’s worth of joe.

That filter is invaluable. It’s a fine mesh filter that may never need replacing. Most of all, it’s one of the most affordable machines you’ll get your hands on. With only three parts, you can be ready to brew within minutes of opening the box.

You may find a cup of Hario coffee lacking in the rich flavor you want, but you can work around that by adding more ground. Compared to iced coffee, cold brew won’t change the delicate chemical composition of fats and oils. This minimizes the possibility of bitter tastes.

The Hario Cold Brew Coffee Pot is going to get you ready every morning and any other time you need a nice jolt of flavor.

Happy Caffeinating!
