Everyone loves a good vanilla latte, but trips to your favorite local coffee shops can begin to add up pretty quickly. This doesn’t mean you have to give up your beloved beverage, though. Just pull out your at-home brewer, round up a few ingredients you probably already have in your pantry or refrigerator, and make a vanilla latte in your kitchen.
And while you’re testing your home barista skills, consider trying a variation of the recipe you’ve never had before or don’t typically drink…like ditching the whole milk and using soy milk instead.
REASONS TO CHOOSE SOY MILK
There are several reasons to use soy milk in your coffee, and perhaps the first is the most obvious: it’s dairy-free. Lactose intolerance or an otherwise unwanted reaction to dairy tends to be the most common reason people turn to non-dairy milk. Of course, you’ve got plenty of options for milk alternatives — almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, and more — so, what makes soy so special?
First of all, it’s high in protein, boasting between 7-10 grams per 8-ounce cup. It also contains phytonutrients called isoflavones, which are known for their cancer-fighting properties. But with these positives come a few negatives and the most popular complaint among soy milk drinkers is that you might notice a bit of a “beany taste,” thanks to its main ingredient, the soybean. But if you can get past that, you’ll find soy milk to be a good choice for meeting your non-dairy milk needs.
MAKE A FROTHY LATTE WITH SOY MILK AT HOME
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 2/3 cup of soy milk
- 1/2 cup of espresso
- Milk frother
The first thing you’ll need to do when making your soy latte is to pour soy milk and sugar in a saucepan, and warm over medium heat the two until the mixture is steamed. Stir it gently as it heats so the sugar dissolves and the milk doesn’t burn.
Remove the milk-sugar mixture from the stove, and stir in the vanilla extract.
Now’s the time to pull out your handy dandy milk frother, and froth the milk until it’s foamy. If you don’t have a frother at your disposal, that’s okay; there are other ways to make milk foam. Put it in a blender or take to it with a handheld mixture for a minute or two, or pour the milk in a lidded mason jar and shake it vigorously until you see bubbles.
Then, pour the sugary, vanilla-flavored soy milk into a mug or tall glass, and pour your freshly brewed espresso over the foamy, fluffy milk. And that’s it; you’re ready to enjoy a delicious dairy-free latte!
