If you’re a coffee connoisseur looking for an automatic coffee maker that combines style, form, and function, the Wilfa Svart Precision 5-cup coffee maker may be one to consider. The Svart’s design is sleek and minimal but stunning in its simplicity. It’s relatively easy to use, and it feels sturdy in your hand. It also makes a pretty darn good cup of coffee, too.
But is this coffee brewer all form and no function? How’s the quality of the build, and will it hold up to consistent use? And most importantly, is it worth the premium price tag? Read on for a complete look at this beautiful statement coffee machine.
Wilfa: An Overview
Wilfa is a Norwegian electronics and appliances company founded in 1948. Today, it’s a leading provider of small home appliances in the Nordic region, but it’s known by coffee enthusiasts worldwide for its premium coffee preparation equipment. Their appliances all have that signature Scandinavian-style minimalist feel that’s both classic and futuristic, all at the same time.
How it works
Unlike other coffee machines, all of the electronics in the Wilfa Svart Precision coffee brewer live in the base, underneath the reservoir and hot plate. This helps to make the design as sleek and minimal as it is. Fresh water is pumped out of the detachable water tank, heated up under the base, and sent back up to drip over the ground coffee in the filter, very much like a pour-over system.

There’s no denying that this classic coffee machine is absolutely beautiful. Its design feels timeless and modern at the same time, and the sleek, minimal design could fit into any home. This Scandinavian-chic design is comfortable in just about any kitchen design, and it’s one appliance that you won’t mind having out on the counter every day!
The base and water flow finish is a slick brushed stainless steel that blends well with the matte black plastic on the carafe. The glass reservoir and carafe are sleek and minimalistic, with a sturdy and reliable appearance that gives this machine a certain kind of timelessness.
This efficient coffee maker has a premium feel, with thick glass and slick matte plastic. However, there have been reports here and there of the paint chipping and even the plastic portion of the carafe cracking in half after only a few months of use.
There have also been reports of the pump giving out unexpectedly. Obviously, that’s not ideal, so if you decide to go with this machine, be sure that an extended warranty is included with your purchase in case the worst happens.
Ease of Use
The design and operation of this machine are simple enough; simply add your water, set your flow rate, and press the start button! The hot water will pump from the reservoir into the coffee filter after a few minutes.
However, this is definitely not a “set it and forget it” kind of machine. You won’t be able to just press a button and walk away (this may not be a problem if you’re okay with actively participating in the coffee-making process, but it’s something to keep in mind).
It requires more participation than other classic coffee makers, from wetting the filter to agitating the coffee as it brews. It’s not for someone who is in a rush every morning and needs their coffee with the press of a button.
Dimensions and Ergonomics
Weighing in at about five pounds and measuring 14.25 x 8.5 x 14 inches, it’s an appropriate size for any kitchen without taking up too much counter space. It’s lightweight enough that it won’t cause many issues moving it around, but it may not be the safest option in a house with lots of people or children due to its glass components.
A couple of other notes: The carafe has a great feel in hand, but the design of the lip around the edge of the carafe makes it challenging to pour out every drop of coffee, which can be super frustrating if you love caffeine as much as we do!
At this point, you may be asking, “Yeah, that’s great and all, but does it actually make good coffee?” And the answer is yes, absolutely! With controls over the water flow and the powerful water heating system, this machine actually delivers when it comes to smoothness and taste. All issues with the build of this machine aside, the actual brewing process and the resulting fantastic-tasting coffee are top-notch!
Of course, all great coffee starts with delicious coffee beans, so when you’re using the Wilfa Precision coffee brewer, be sure to choose the best quality beans you can afford. We recommend a medium or dark roast, given the brewing process is similar to a pour-over system.
Warranty and Customer Service
When it comes to your coffee machine or any machine that you plan on using every day, you need to make sure you take full advantage of the warranty if anything happens. In the case of this expensive coffee maker, you especially want to embrace the warranty at every opportunity, given the reports of chipping and cracking.
This machine comes with a fantastic and very generous 5-year warranty, which should be more than enough since any major defects likely will have shown themselves at that point.
Unfortunately, it seems a bit difficult to get through to customer service to report a warranty claim. If having ready and attentive customer support is a big deal for you, this might not be the machine for you.
Pros and Cons
Things We Like:
- The water reservoir is easy to remove and clean; in fact, most of the machine can easily be rinsed or wiped down without any extra hassle.
- The water brews hot right from the beginning, and the temperature stays constant throughout the entire brew cycle.
- With the adjustable water flow control, you can quickly and easily control the strength of your coffee.
- The markings on the side of the water reservoir make it very easy to measure out your water and create the correct coffee-to-water ratio for your coffee.
- It comes with a 5-year warranty, which is fantastic considering reports of faulty machines.
Things We Don’t Like:
- The design of the carafe makes it difficult to pour out every last drop of coffee.
- The pump vibration is noisy right at the start of the brew process. If you’re annoyed by noise, this is something to keep in mind.
- A vacuum flask would have been better to keep the coffee fresh and hot than a glass carafe and hotplate. If you brew multiple servings at once, the quality of the coffee will degrade as it sits in the carafe and you might end up with stale coffee.
- It’s quite a bit more expensive than most mid-range modern drip coffee machines. It is definitely not the most budget-friendly coffee machine!
- With a glass carafe and a hot plate, it’s not the safest option if you’re in a crowded home or have small children running around.
The Wilfa classic coffee maker is a beautiful marriage of art and technology. Its design somehow feels like the future of coffee. But is it really worth the price tag, and is it right for you?
Unfortunately, I would say that if you’re dead set on this famous coffee maker because of the aesthetic design or the automatic pour-over brewing style, then you may want to wait for it to go on sale or until you can find a good deal. On its own, with the minor design complaints and reports of poor build quality, this machine’s consistently decent coffee still doesn’t justify its high price point.
Only you can decide if the Wilfa Precision coffee maker is right for you, but consider a few factors: How often will you use the machine? Do you have small children or live in a crowded home where a glass carafe is unsafe? How important to you are looks and aesthetic versus design features?
