The OXO Barista Brain coffee maker is for any coffee lover who wants that perfect cup of java without having to wait for the brewing process or spending a ton of money at your favorite coffee shop. Be your own Barista in the comfort of your home with this high-tech drip coffee maker.
The makers of the OXO Barista Brain took great care to ensure that each cup of coffee brewed in your machine meets the Gold Cup Standards. What this means for you is that your home-brewed cup of joe is going to taste just like a professional barista roasted it.
This high-tech coffee maker can be programmed, so it brews the set amount of coffee, from two to nine cups, at whatever time you’ve chosen. Never have to wait on your coffee to brew again. Need to fill your container in a hurry while the coffee’s still brewing?
The OXO includes a pause and pours feature. Once the machine detects the carafe has been removed, it pauses brewing. If you replace the pot within sixty seconds, the brewing cycle resumes and finishes. It does take up to six minutes to brew a full pot ultimately.
This machine needs paper filters, which you’ll need to purchase separately, as you’ll only get ten filters with the purchase of your machine. It also comes with a handy coffee scoop, so you will always know how much grinds you’re adding.
- Rain-head drip
- Pause and pour feature
- Single-serve or make two to nine cups

The OXO Barista Brain is a high-tech piece of machinery that is sure to serve up perfectly heated coffee at the push of a button, every time. The manufacturers took great pains to ensure this coffee machine meets the highest standards to rival any professional machine you’d find at a coffee shop. Here are some of the great things the OXO Barista Brain has going for it.

This machine is big -15 inches tall by 8.3 inches thick and 17.2 inches wide – so you’re sure to feel like a professional while using it. But it is stylish so it’ll look good sitting on your counter. If you’ve got the room.
On one side of the machine sits the LED screen and controls, set inside a black base. A stainless steel band at the top of this side separates the large, see-through water reservoir. The top is black plastic.
On the opposite side, separated by the hinge, is the top that lifts so you can add in your filter and coffee grinds. The housing for the filter and coffee is also shiny metal. Underneath is the shiny silver carafe, in an aesthetically pleasing flared shape, with a black top and a non-slip wide black handle.
The sleek black and silver design is sure to blend in with the most home decor and add a touch of style to your kitchen. If you have the extra counter space, your OXO Barista Brain can become another of your beloved appliances.
For me to enjoy my coffee, it has to be the right temperature. I’m not one of those girls who likes her coffee cold. The OXO Barista Brain heats the water to the ideal coffee temperature of 197.6 to 204.8 degrees before it drips into your cup or carafe.
The included stainless steel carafe is double-walled and vacuum-sealed to keep your coffee fresh and hot. Inside, there’s a silicone mixing tube that blends the coffee before pouring, so each cup tastes fresh and yummy.
Some customers did experience problems getting the full amount of coffee out of the carafe; they often had to throw away the last half cup or so. There have also been numerous complaints that the maker continues to drip liquid once you’ve removed the carafe. There is no drip-stop option.
There were also some issues with cleaning. The carafe has to be hand cleaned, which can be difficult for those with large hands. Some items can be placed in the dishwasher.
To ensure each pot of coffee is made to the Gold Cup Standard, the OXO Barista Brain uses a controlled brew cycle, which mimics the pour-over method.
The brewing starts with a short cycle of water poured into the cone-shaped brew basket, equally saturating all the grounds simultaneously thanks to the seven-hole rain-head.
After the first short cycle of water, the water continues to disperse in controlled portions after being correctly heated to the desired temperature. Your coffee is sure to be full of flavor and equally heated. There’s no worry of hot spots with this smart coffee maker.
Being able to program your coffee pot to automatically brew your nectar of the Gods at a specific time is a crucial necessity for me. For others, it might not be such a big deal. It seems like the folks at OXO agree that an auto-brew is a necessity.
The Barista Brain can be programmed with ease to brew the proper amount of coffee at whatever time of day suits your needs. Simply hold down the OXO button – the only button on the machine – until the display switches to the timer.
Now, you’ll set your time using the twist dial – the OXO button. Be sure you pay attention to the AM or PM, so your coffee brews at the proper time. I’ve made this mistake a time or two.
Next, select whether you want to brew a small pot, which means selecting the 2-4 option, or a more significant amount, which means you’d choose 5-9. Remember, you can also make just one cup by adding the appropriate amount of water and grounds, and removing the carafe to replace it with your cup.
To control exactly how many cups of coffee you end up with, you’ll have to use the see-through reservoir, which holds up to nine cups (40 ounces) of water – enough to make a full pot. The tank is labeled for your convenience.
If you only want a single cup, just add one cup of water in the reservoir. This does mean you’ll have to add water before each new brew. Unfortunately, you can’t have specific control of exactly how many cups to make using the dial. It’s all in how much water you add.
Unlike other coffee makers, the reservoir cannot be removed for filling. However, the design of the OXO Barista Brain makes it easy to refill the tank by lifting the lid and pouring in the amount of water you want to use.
I love coffee makers that include a working clock, and the OXO Barista Brain doesn’t disappoint. The clock is on constant display on the backlit LED screen in bright large numbers. It even lists AM or PM, which I genuinely appreciate.
Another cool thing that you’ll see on your OXO LED screen is a freshness indicator. Once you’ve brewed a pot of coffee, a timer starts to count up to 60, indicating how long, in minutes, the coffee has been made. You never have to worry about drinking stale coffee again!
When you remove the carafe, a small red carafe icon starts blinking on the screen, as well as turning the area around the knob/OXO button red. It’s a great way to remember to put the carafe back after you’ve made your cup of coffee so the Barista Brain can resume its brewing. Gotta love that automatic pause and pour feature.
If you’re going to have the OXO Barista Brain, you’ll need the proper coffee. This machine requires that you use ground coffee instead of fresh coffee beans. Some people prefer to buy their coffee already ground up, while others like to blend their own.
If you want to ground up your grinds, we recommend the OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder, which includes an integrated scale. This simple grinder can make enough grounds to make up to 12 cups of coffee. You can even set it to go from fine to coarse grounds. It’s the perfect addition to your OXO Barista Brain coffee maker.
OXO even makes an excellent product for making cold brew coffee, as well as their own French Press coffee makers as well. And let’s not forget the big daddy of them all, the 12 cup OXO Barista Brain, which has lots of extra features, including the option to make tea. But it’s also huge!
Unfortunately, there are not attachments you could purchase to make this coffee maker do specialty drinks like cold brew, mochas, coffees, or teas. We were a bit disappointed with this, especially given the size of the machine. I feel that for the amount of space we’re losing to use this machine, it should be able to do more types of coffee.
When compared to other similar coffee makers like the Bonavita BV 1900TS or the Technivorm Moccamaster, the OXO Barista Brain has similar performance. However, users found the OXO to be easier to use than its competitors. And the steel carafe is harder to damage than glass carafes.
The Technivorm Moccamaster has some features we’d love to see incorporated into the OXO, including a hot plate that warms the coffee from the bottom (usually seen with glass carafes such as this one), an adjustable brew basket, and automatic power-off.
The Bonavita BV 1900TS has a lot of similar features to the OXO Barista Brain, including a stainless steel carafe. But for me, the OXO is much more stylish. What we do love about this model that isn’t available in the OXO is the optional pre-infusion mode, which pauses the water after the first shot, so the coffee has time to bloom. However, it can only make 8 cups at once.
The OXO Barista Brain is sure to become your favorite coffee maker. It only takes three steps to have a piping hot pot of coffee ready in less than ten minutes.
- Put in the filter and measured coffee grinds
- Pick your serving size (and time if you’re using automatic brewing)
- Push the OXO button/dial
The hardest part is the wait, although you do have that nifty pause and pour option, so you don’t have to wait too long. Enjoy a coffee maker that’s been approved by the Specialty Coffee Association. Just don’t expect to be able to make specialty coffees with this model. It only makes yummy hot coffee.
