Of course, at the end of the day, the coffee you’re drinking should be filled with things you like, so don’t feel pressured to toss out all of your dairy milk and replace it with nut milk if you don’t really want to. There are actually a few reasons many go nuts for the nut-based milk alternative, one being that almond milk is lower in calories than cow’s milk, making this an excellent choice for coffee fanatics who are looking to shed a few pounds. Coming in at a close second and third on the list of almond milk’s benefits are its low sugar content and high amount of vitamin E.
Beyond the health benefits it possesses, people just like the way it tastes, and that’s a good enough reason to add it to your brew. There are, however, many who aren’t a fan of its slightly nutty flavor, especially with unsweetened almond milk, so keep that in mind if you decide to pick up a carton.
And here’s some good news for the most dedicated at-home baristas: you can make homemade almond milk very easily. All you need is almonds, water, a blender, a strainer, and some kind of sweetener or flavoring, like maple syrup or vanilla extract. Though it requires a bit of extra effort, many fans of the non-dairy milk swear making your own version of the drink is better than buying the product from one of the leading almond milk brands.
TRY THIS DAIRY-FREE LATTE RECIPE AT HOME
- 1/3 cup of strong brewed coffee
- 2/3 cup of vanilla almond milk
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- A saucepan
Begin by pouring your vanilla almond milk and sugar into a saucepan, and warm the mixture on medium heat. Make sure you whisk it occasionally so the milk doesn’t burn. When bubbles form, take the saucepan off the heat.
In the meantime, as your almond milk and sugar heat on the stove, start your coffee maker (or espresso machine, if you need a brew that’s a bit stronger).
Once the coffee’s finished brewing, pour it into a mug and follow it with the milk-sugar mixture. Use a spoon to top the delicious almond milk latte off with a bit of fluffy, bubbly milk foam.

- ⅓ cup of strong brewed coffee or espresso
- ⅔ cup of vanilla almond milk
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Heat milk and sugar in a pot over medium heat. Whisking occasionally.
